چکیده

High spatial and temporal resolution maps of sea surface temperature (SST) have numerous applications in coastal and estuarine systems. A climatology map, tracking SST as a function of year-day, was produced at Southern New England using 53 Landsat TM and ETM+ thermal infrared data. A recursive curve-fitting algorithm was used to fit these data and eliminate cloud contamination, resulting in an average daily temperature at every 60-m pixel. The climatology was validated against long-term in situ records that were analyzed with the same techniques. The results show, as expected, that isolated and shallow water bodies undergo more extreme temperature variation ( 2 to 25 jC) than deeper, well-connected embayments (1 to 21 jC) or the coastal ocean (4 to 18 jC). The coastal ocean is shown to lag insolation and shallow lakes by up to 44 days, with embayments showing a gradation between these extremes. Despite the subtle temperature range variation, there is rich detail in the spatial patterns which are relevant to the applied sciences of coastal and estuarine systems. The spatial pattern of the climatology reveals anomalous patterns, such as occur where anthropogenic forcing alters climatological patterns. The heat budget of Mount Hope Bay in northeast Narragansett Bay has anthropogenic thermal input from a large power plant, and this input is reflected in the climatology. From the results, it is seen that Narragansett Bay has, on average, a mean annual temperature of 11.86F 0.41 jC, while the Mount Hope Bay system is consistently warmer at 12.30F 0.21 jC and shows a delayed response to autumn cooling. The long history of Landsat data acquisition can be used to create a climatology of coastal and estuarine scale dynamics at an order of magnitude finer scale resolution than AVHRR climatologies. Geothermal area detection using Landsat 8 operational land imager and thermal infrared sensor data in Ardabil province, Iran

GIS and remote sensing technique with using Landsat 8 images data are very important methods for detection of geothermal resources. In this study, Land Surface Temperature (LST) for Ardabil province in northwest of Iran, was derived with the use of Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) of 30 m spatial resolution and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data of 100 m spatial resolution. We consider ...

Fusion of Thermal Infrared and Visible Images Based on Multi-scale Transform and Sparse Representation

Due to the differences between the visible and thermal infrared images, combination of these two types of images is essential for better understanding the characteristics of targets and the environment. Thermal infrared images have most importance to distinguish targets from the background based on the radiation differences, which work well in all-weather and day/night conditions also in land s...

Modeling the potential of Sand and Dust Storm sources formation using time series of remote sensing data, fuzzy logic and artificial neural network (A Case study of Euphrates basin)

Due to the differences between the visible and thermal infrared images, the combination of these two types of images leads to better understanding of  the characteristics of targets and the environment. Thermal infrared images are really in distinguishing targets from the background based on the radiation differences and  land surface temperature (LST) calculation. However, their spatial resolu...

Monitoring spatial and temporal distribution of Sea Surface Temperature with TIR sensor data

This study was primarily aimed at verifying the potentiality of medium spatial resolution Thermal Infrared (TIR) data in monitoring environmental aspects strictly correlated to SST (Sea Surface Temperature), such as industrial cooling water discharges and the increase in seawater temperature over time, at two coastal sites in the Apulia region (Italy).TIR data acquired by LANDSAT ETM+ and ASTER...

Effect of remote sensing spatial resolution on interpreting tower-based flux observations

Validation comparisons between satellite-based surface energy balance models and tower-based flux measurements over heterogeneous landscapes can be strongly influenced by the spatial resolution of the remote sensing inputs. In this paper, a two-source energy balance model developed to use thermal and visible /near-infrared remotely sensed data is applied to Landsat imagery collected during the ...
